3D Urban UAV Relay Placement: Linear Complexity Algorithm and Analysis

Optimal unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) placement in a 3-dimensional (3D) space to build connection between base station (BS) and ground user is studied herein. A key challenge avoid signal propagation blockage due obstacles. Much prior work uses probabilistic terrain models with model parameters learned from the statistics over large area, therefore, optimization for specific small local area poor. In contrast, this paper seeks optimal UAV position actual fine-grained terrain, develops efficient positioning strategy adaptive degree of location-dependent line-of-sight (LOS) condition measured on fly. It proven that globally 3D can be determined proposed search trajectory which has merely linear length diameter target area. Therefore, practically implemented. Numerical experiments are performed real-world urban topology demonstrate superior performance gain existing strategies based models.
